
Joel Mamboka
(b. 1990, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo)
Joel Mamboka N'Kumu, an artist from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, brings a unique exploration of the sapeur culture to his artwork. Known for its striking and sophisticated attire, this culture, originating in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, is vividly depicted in his art.
Joel's debut in South Africa was at the Zeitz MOCAA Museum in 2019 as part of the emerging artists program. He later participated in a group exhibition titled "Home is Where the Art Is" at the same museum. He has also held two solo exhibitions at Youngblood Gallery and has been featured internationally in the United States (The Black Art House), Kenya (Bobu Africa Gallery), Lisbon (This Is Not a White Cube), and is represented by Read Contemporary Art/Knysna Fine Art (Everard Read Gallery Franschhoek).
